Ben Hutchings: Debian LTS work, February 2015

This was my third month working on Debian LTS, and the first where I actually uploaded packages. I also worked on userland packages for the first time. In the middle of February I finished and uploaded a security update for the kernel package (linux-2.6 version 2.6.32-48squeeze11, DLA 155-1). I decided not to include the fix for CVE-2014-9419 and the large FPU/MMX/SSE/AVX state management changes it depends on, as they don't seem to be worth the risk. The old patch system used in linux-2.6 in squeeze still frustrates me, but I committed a script in the kernel subversion repository to simplify adding patches to it. This might be useful to any other LTS team members working on it. In the past week I uploaded security updates for cups (version 1.4.4-7+squeeze7, DLA 159-1) and sudo (1.7.4p4-2.squeeze.5, DLA 160-1). My work on the cups package was slowed down by its reliance on dpatch, which thankfully has been replaced in later versions. sudo is a more modern quilt/debhelper package, but upstream has an odd way of building manual pages. In the version used in squeeze the master format is Perl POD, while in wheezy it's mandoc, but in both cases the upstream source includes pre-generated manual pages and doesn't rebuild them by default. debian/rules is supposed to fix this but doesn't (#779363), so I had to regenerate 'by hand' and fold the changes into the respective patches. Finally, I started work on addressing the many remaining security issues in eglibc. Most of the patches applied to wheezy were usable with minimal adjustment, but I didn't have time left to perform any meaningful testing. I intend to upload what I've done to people.debian.org for testing by interested parties and then make an upload early in March (or let someone else on the LTS or glibc team do so). Update: I sent mail about the incomplete eglibc update to the debian-lts list.

Holger Levsen: 20150205-lts-january-2015

My LTS January It was very nice to hear many appreciations for our work on Squeeze LTS during the last weekend at FOSDEM. People really seem to like and use LTS a lot - and start to rely on it. I was approached more than once about Wheezy LTS already... (Most of my FOSDEM time I spent with reproducible builds however, though this shall be the topic of another report, coming hopefully soon.) So, about LTS. First I'd like to describe some current practices clearly: I hope this clarifies things. And as usual, things are open for discussion and best practices will change over time. In January 2014 I spent 12h on Debian LTS work and managed to get four DLAs released, plus I've marked some CVEs as not affecting squeeze. The DLAs I released were: Thanks to everyone who is supporting Squeeze LTS in whatever form! We like to hear from you, we love your contributions, but it's also totally ok to silently enjoy a good old quality distribution :-) Finally, something for the future: checking for previous DLAs is currently best done via said mailing list archive, as DLAs are not yet integrated into the website due to a dependency loop of blocking bugs... see #761945 for a starting point.

C.J. Adams-Collier: When was the last time you upgraded from squeeze to wheezy?

Wow. 3G delta. I haven t booted this laptop for a while I think I m finally ready to make the move from gnome2 to gnome3. There are bits that still annoy me, but I think it s off to a good start. Upgrading perl from 5.10 to 5.14.

Roland Mas: Rsyncing a BackupPC storage pool, efficiently

BackupPC is a pretty good backup system. Its configuration is rather flexible, it has nice expiry policies, and it can store duplicated file contents only once (for files that are shared across hosts or don't change in time) within a compressed pool of data. However, it doesn't do much to help pushing the data to off-site storage, or at least not very efficiently. So if you have a BackupPC instance running on a Raspberry Pi or a plug computer at home, it's a bit tricky to protect your data against loss due to burglary or home fire. The obvious solution would be to rsync the storage pool to a remote site. However, the current pooling system relies heavily on hardlinks, and rsync is notoriously inefficient with those. In the home backup server scenario, this means that even if the computer is more powerful than a Pi and can handle the memory requirements of rsync, you'll often end up transferring way too much data. So, since the obvious solution doesn't work straight away, what do we do? Why, we fix it, of course. With a little look into the storage pool, we notice that the bulk of the data is stored in files with an abstract name (related to the contents) within a $prefix/pool directory; the files with concrete names looking much like their original are stored within $prefix/pc, and they're actually the same files because they're hardlinks. Knowing this (that rsync doesn't), we can make a smarter replication tool, by
  1. pushing only the pool with standard rsync;
  2. storing locally, and recreating remotely, the structure of hardlinks;
  3. pushing everything again with standard rsync.
Steps 1 and 3 are simple invocations of rsync -aH; step 2 can be implemented using the following two scripts. Run store-hardlinks.pl locally, push the links file, then run restore-hardlinks.pl on the remote server. This will ensure that files already present in the pool are also hardlinked in their natural location. store-hardlinks.pl:
#! /usr/bin/perl -w
use strict;
use Storable qw(nstore);
use File::Find;
use vars qw/$prefix $poolpath $pcpath %i2cpool %todo $store/;
$prefix = '/var/lib/backuppc';
$poolpath = '$prefix/cpool';
$pcpath = '$prefix/pc';
$store = '$prefix/links';
# for the convenience of &wanted calls, including -eval statements:
use vars qw/*name *dir *prune/;
*name   = *File::Find::name;
*dir    = *File::Find::dir;
*prune  = *File::Find::prune;
# Scan pool
File::Find::find( wanted => \&wanted_pool , $poolpath);
# Scan PC dirs
File::Find::find( wanted => \&wanted_pc , $pcpath);
nstore \%todo, $store;
exit;
sub wanted_pc
    my ($dev,$ino,$mode,$nlink,$uid,$gid);
    (($dev,$ino,$mode,$nlink,$uid,$gid) = lstat($_)) &&
      -f _ &&
      ($nlink > 1) &&
      do
      $name =~ s,$pcpath/,,;
      if (defined $i2cpool $ino )
      $todo $name  = $i2cpool $ino ;

sub wanted_pool
    my ($dev,$ino,$mode,$nlink,$uid,$gid);
    (($dev,$ino,$mode,$nlink,$uid,$gid) = lstat($_)) &&
      -f _ &&
      ($nlink > 1) &&
      do
      $name =~ s,$poolpath/,,;
      $i2cpool $ino  = $name;

restore-hardlinks.pl:
#! /usr/bin/perl -w
use strict;
use Storable;
use File::Path qw/make_path/;
use vars qw/$prefix $poolpath $pcpath %todo $store/;
$prefix = '/srv/backuppc-mirror';
$poolpath = "$prefix/cpool";
$pcpath = "$prefix/pc";
$store = "$prefix/links";
%todo = % retrieve ($store) ;
my ($dev,$ino,$mode,$nlink,$uid,$gid);
foreach my $src (keys %todo)
    my $inode;
    my $dest = $todo $src ;
    my $dpath = "$poolpath/$dest";
    my $spath = "$pcpath/$src";
    my $sdir = $spath;
    $sdir =~ s,/[^/]*?$,,;
    make_path ($sdir);
    next unless -e $dpath;
    if (! -e $spath)
      link $dpath, $spath;
      next;

    (($dev,$ino,$mode,$nlink,$uid,$gid) = lstat($spath));
    $inode = $ino;
    (($dev,$ino,$mode,$nlink,$uid,$gid) = lstat($dpath));
    if ($ino != $inode)
      unlink $spath;
      link $dpath, $spath;

The initial transfer can still take forever if the pool is large (and if you're pushing it through the small end of an ADSL link ), but at least the files are only transferred once. Note: This is only useful for current versions of BackupPC. Apparently BackupPC 4 will have a different pooling system without hardlinks, and the following hack will no longer be required. For now, though, here it is.

Jan Wagner: nagios-plugins: Call for testing

Some of you might have noticed there is a new nagios-plugins version in the row. To support upstream in evaluating bugs and bringing the code to a wider audience, I uploaded the latest development version into Debian unstable. Since this package version contrib/ is dropped by upstream. But we stopped shipping the latest plugins of contrib/ with Debian wheezy. We also removed perlmods/ from the upstream tarball, as this was never used by our package. The packaging changes are:
* New upstream git snapshot (b15adb7762)
  - Adjust debian/copyright
* Droped the following upstream integrated patches
  - 05_fix_gets_undefined_in_iso_c11.dpatch
  - 10_check_apt_perfdata.dpatch
  - 11_check_nt_npe.dpatch
  - 12_check_smtp_double_threshold.dpatch
* Fix removing empty /usr/include
* Add new check_dbi into nagios-plugins-standard
* Remove whois from Recommands, as check_bgpstate is removed
* Cleanup debian/rules from unused stuff
* Provide information about repackaging
  - Extend debian/README.source
  - Add debian/bin/repack.sh
* Updating standards version to 3.9.4 (no changes needed)
* Add libfreeradius-client-dev to build-deps and remove libradiusclient-ng-dev
  (Closes: #721621)
* Remove traces of contrib/ from debian/copyright
* Remove command.cfg from examples in nagios-plugins-common, it was removed
  upstream
The Debian Nagios Maintainer and Upstream Developer are asking you to try out this new package on non production systems. Not that we think there might be a high risk for damage, but you know .. :) The latest version of the plugins are running on several systems already, but it is nearly impossible to test all scenarios even automated. If you find bugs, please report all packaging bugs into the BTS. Upstream bugs you might consider to report in the upstream bugtracker. If you want to give it a try on Debian wheezy, you could install the packages from our wheezy-backports repository:
    # wget "http://ftp.cyconet.org/debian/sources.list.d/wheezy-backports-cyconet.list" \
        -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/wheezy-backports-cyconet.list
    # aptitude update
    # aptitude -t wheezy-backports install nagios-plugins
For adding our archive key, you can just install the package "debian-cyconet-archive-keyring"

Benjamin Mako Hill: 1-800-INTERNET.COM

I just returned home from Aaron Swartz s funeral in Chicago. Aaron was a good friend. The home I ve returned to is an apartment that was Aaron s before it was mine, that I have lived in with Aaron during several stints, and that I still share with many of his old books and posters. Although, I ve spent what feels like most of the last five days reading things that people have written about Aaron, I m still processing and digesting myself. Right now, I m very sad and at a loss for words. While I reflect, I wanted to share this video recently put online by Finne Boonen. The video was made in 2006 at a Web 1.0 Elevator Pitch Competition held at Wikimania 2006 about a year after that both Aaron and I moved to Cambridge and met. The goal of the contest was to pitch Web 1.0 DotCom business ideas to a team of real Web 1.0 investors like it was still 1999. Aaron and I formed a team along with SJ Klein (who I traveled to the funeral with this week), and Wikimania general counsel and interim executive director Brad Patrick. The video shows how as Danny O Brien has reminded us Aaron was funny. He came up with many our teams best lines in addition to checking our Web 1.0 boxes for tech guru and Stanford dropout. Our pitch for 1-800-INTERNET.COM is in the video below. The transcript was done by Phoebe Ayers in Facebook and the video is also available in WebM. <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NzFjWY6Fd_g" width="420"></iframe>
SJ: You know, Mako and I had some pretty good ideas for improving connectivity to the internet, and we think we can reach 90% of the world s population. So think about this. You re sitting in a Starbucks, and you need to connect to the internet. But you can t, because there s no internet. But what is there, near every Starbucks? There s a payphone! You pick up the payphone, and you call . 1-800-INTERNET. You can connect to our bank of researchers on our fast T1 connections and get any information you need! So, we don t actually have 1-800-INTERNET yet, we have 1-800-225-3224, so the first thing we need to do is buy the number. So here s Mako, who is our web designer from UC Santa Cruz and Bradford, our financial guru, and Aaron, who s handling all of our technical implementation. But Mako, you should explain the earballs. Mako: So, so, so yeah, so most people on the Internet are going for the eyeballs, but they ve just left all of these earballs. So I have some experience in web design, and it s true that this isn t really a website, but we still need good web design. So, so, I ve actually got a really experienced team, we can go into later, and we have some really great earcons not icons, but earcons.. And it s going to be all together, not apart like some of the websites. It s going to be together. Brad: so how does this work technically? Aaron: Well, I mean, so I only spent one year at Stanford but that s Ok, because there are new developmental technologies, we re going to throw away all that old stuff, we re going to use really reliable and efficient well-designed code that everyone can clearly understand, and write the whole thing in Perl. I know this is a risk, but I am confident that Perl is going to destroy those old C websites. No one will write websites in C anymore once we do this, it s going to be so much faster, and so dynamic, everythings going to be like, on top of everything. It s going to be great. Bradford: So here s the business model. It s really really simple, and it s a really really great idea. It s all about the licensing. Because what we re going to have are these underlying audio ads, While you re on the phone you re going to hear this subliminal advertising message. And the way it works is really really cool, because it s really really low volume, it s high impact! And it s even better, because we license it, and the way it works is when a caller calls 1-800-Internet, they re hearing the ad, but so is the representative, so we get to bill em twice! So that s it: All: 1-800-INTERNET.COM
We did not win and I still believe that we were robbed.

Bartosz Fe&#324;ski: Two full-time days to work on Debian

My current employer as a benefit offers two days of paid volunteer time every calendar year. In September I decided to devote this time for Debian project. It wasn t easy to convince HR and my manager (hi Gloria ;) ) that such activity can be considered as volunteering but I eventually did it! So last Thursday and Friday were days I could spent working on my packages and other stuff related to Debian ;) Let s talk about effects. 5 packages updated, 16 bugs closed, more than 50 lintian warnings/errors solved. Here goes changelogs from updated packages:
calcurse (3.1.2-1) unstable; urgency=low
* The Akamai Technologies paid volunteer days release.
* Package made from scratch (this was funny experience):
- uses new quilt source format
- uses new copyright format

Despite this I did something else. I sent end of the world joke-mail to debian-mentors mailing list stating (ignore the fact that my own server marked me as spammer; fixed already ;P) that I m going to review and try to upload every package that will be send to me during end-of-the-world day.
That action was quite successful although no package has been uploaded yet. I reviewed 4 of them and two more are yet to come. So it looks that these two days sponsored by Akamai motivated me enough to spent few more days or even months and help other people to contribute to Debian. Thank you Akamai!

Paul Tagliamonte: Scripting Python in Clojure

Yeah, wait, what? No, really! I took a look through clojure-py, and found out something pretty rad. In order to get clojurepy scripts to load other clojurepy, it had to shim out and add a new importer for clojure scripts. What this really means, is that you can import Clojure from Python, which is pretty sweet. I abused the internals here, and added it to dput-ng as a quick hack. Basically, I just had to import clojure.main, and let the main function set up the sys shim. I would set it up in dput, but I d have to import that module anyway. Remember, when doing this, the namespace ((ns ...)) needs to match the filename. So, I present the first Clojure hook for dput-ng:
; Copyright (c) Paul R. Tagliamonte <paultag@debian.org>, 2012, under the
; terms of dput-ng itsself.
(ns clojtest
  (:require dput.core
            dput.exceptions))
(defn log [x] ; for debug output
  (.debug dput.core/logger x))
(defn dput-checker [changes profile interface]
  (cond (>= (-> changes (.get "maintainer") (.find "arno@debian.org")) 0)
    (throw (dput.exceptions/HookException. "Maintainer's Arno. Aborting upload"))
  :else
    (log "Nah, it's not arno, we're good")))
This, of course, checks if the maintainer is Arno, and throws a fit if it is. Gist is over on gist.github. After, Algernon added his own checker, which throws a fit if you have a package in the B-Ds that you aught to not use (such as dpatch)
; Copyright (c) Gergely Nagy <algernon@debian.org>, 2012, under the
; terms of dput-ng itself.
(ns bd-blacklist
  (:require dput.core
            dput.exceptions
            dput.dsc))
(defn prune-build-deps
  "Prune a string representation of the build-depends so that only a
  list of packages remain."
  [bd-string]
  (map #(first (-> % (.strip) (.split " "))) (.. bd-string (split ","))))
(defn has-blacklisted?
  "Given a dsc file and a blacklist, check if any of the
  build-depencencies are in that list. Throws an error if there are
  matches."
  [dsc-file blacklist]
  (let [dsc (dput.dsc/parse_dsc_file dsc-file)
        build-deps (prune-build-deps (.. dsc (get "build-depends")))]
    (if-let [bad-bd (some blacklist build-deps)]
      (throw (dput.exceptions/HookException. (str "Blacklisted build-dependency found: " bad-bd)))
      (-> dput.core/logger (.trace "Build-Dependencies do not have anything on the blacklist")))))
(defn blacklist-checker
  "Checks whether the dsc has blacklisted build-dependencies, ignores
  the check when no dsc is to be found."
  [changes profile interface]
  (if-let [dsc-file (.. changes (get_dsc))]
    (has-blacklisted? dsc-file (set (get profile "bd-blacklist")))
    (-> dput.core/logger (.trace "No .dsc found, build-dependencies cannot be checked"))))
You can check that out in the git tree Hacks welcome!

Arnaud Quette: Cryptography: SSL support using Mozilla NSS landed in NUT

this week, a new feature was merged into the NUT development tree: beside of the historical OpenSSL support (for more than 10 years), NUT now also provides SSL features using Mozilla NSS. I've already posted a lengthy mail on the NUT developers list. But there are still a few things to be told: For the braves who want to test, here is a small procedure, adapted to Debian. We will use an existing installation, and overwrite upsd, upsmon, libupsclient and few more. Beware that it will obviously breaks the MD5 sums of your nut packages!
# apt-get install nut
$ tar xzvf nut-trunk-r3751.tar.gz
# apt-get install libnss3-dev
./configure --without-all --with-nss \
        --prefix=/ --sysconfdir=/etc/nut  \
        --with-statepath=/var/run/nut \
        --with-altpidpath=/var/run/nut \
        --with-drvpath=/lib/nut \
        --with-pidpath=/var/run/nut \
        --datadir=/usr/share/nut \
        --with-pkgconfig-dir=/usr/lib/pkgconfig \
        --with-user=nut --with-group=nut
$ make && make install
Before concluding, here is the traditional thank you guys: As a conclusion, cryptography integration and usability is still not on par with other proprietary OS. I would love to see the crypto situation improving in Debian (and friends obviously). So this was just my 2 cents (nuts ;-)) to the cause... cheers,

Sylvain Le Gall: Coding by example, migrating ocsoap to OASIS and ocamlbuild

In my effort to automate most of the stuff needed to release, I am working on a SOAP to OCaml converter. Richard W.M. Jones has kindly allowed me to take-over its project "ocsoap". The project is now located here and I am working on making it compatible with FusionForge SOAP. My first step was to make it compatible with OASIS and ocamlbuild. The project is Makefile based and needs some extra care to make it ocamlbuild based. The oasis-fication itself was a piece of cake. Just describe the dependencies of the project and make some extra choice like compiling the camlp5 extension to a .cma rather than a .cmo. You can see the _oasis and myocamlbuild.ml results, compared to the initial Makefile. The _oasis is simple:

Document "api-ocsoap"
  Title: API reference of OCSoap
  Type: ocamlbuild (0.3)
  BuildTools+: ocamldoc
  XOCamlbuildLibraries: ocsoap
  XOCamlbuildPath:      src/
Most of it was generated using oasis quickstart, that helps you to write _oasis. This part was not tricky and mostly a translation of what the previous Makefile was explaining, in its language. Now comes the tricky part, translating Makefile rules into ocamlbuild rules. This part is more tricky because the general principle behind Makefile and ocamlbuild are not exactly the same. Let's start with a simple rule: compiling a CDuce .cd file into a .cdo. Here is the Makefile rule:
%.cdo: %.cd
        $(CDUCE) --compile $<
In the oasis-fication, we have added an extra complexity, because we move the source to src, which needs extra flags. Here is the ocamlbuild rule:
rule "cduce: %.cd -> %.cdo"
  ~prod:"%.cdo"
  ~dep:"%.cd"
  begin
    fun env build ->
      Cmd(S[cduce;
            T(tags_of_pathname (env "%.cd")++"cduce"++"compile");
            A"--compile";
            A"-I"; P(Filename.dirname (env "%.cd"));
            P (env "%.cd")])
  end
;;
It is a little bit more complex, lets explain it. The function rule create a rule with a name and a function that execute it. The labels ~prod and ~dep are the right and left parts of %.cdo: %.cd of the Makefile. When we call env "%cd", it replaces the % by the matching part of ~prod and ~dep. Next we return a Rule.action. The rule in this case is a command Cmd. This rules use a sequence S, which are the command line itself. The sequence is made of smaller pieces that can be a placeholder for tag content (T + what will trigger it), atom (A, typically command line option), and filename (P). For a file src/foo.ml, the command generated will
cduce $(TAG) --compile -I src src/foo.ml
where $(TAG) will be replaced by the content of flag ["file:src/foo.ml"; "cduce"; "compile"] content. But also by the content of flag ["cduce"; "compile"] content, the flag just need to be subset. For example if you want to add --verbose to the command line, just add flag ["cduce"; "compile"] (S[A"--verbose"]);; somewhere in myocamlbuild.ml. Next rules, we need to compile %.cdo to %.cmo. It is trickier because in this case, we want to have %.cmi eventually built before. It is not require to build it before, if there is no %.mli file. Here is the code to do that:
let cduce_mkstubs includes =
  Quote (S([cduce;
            S(List.map
                (fun fn -> S[A"-I"; P fn])
                includes);
            A"--mlstub"]));;
(* cduce < 0.3.9:  cdo2ml -static *)
let cduce_compile_args env =
  [
    A"-c"; A"-package"; A"cduce";
    A"-pp"; cduce_mkstubs [Filename.dirname (env "%.cmi")];
    A"-I"; P(Filename.dirname (env "%.cmi"));
    A"-impl"; P(env "%.cdo")
  ]
;;
let cduce_prepare_compile env build =
  List.iter
    (function
         Outcome.Bad _ ->
           (* Fail but it just means that the .cmi will be generated
            * during compilation.
            *)
           ()
         Outcome.Good _ ->
           ())
    (build [[env "%.cmi"]])
;;
rule "cduce: %.cdo -> %.cmo"
  ~prod:"%.cmo"
  ~dep:"%.cdo"
  begin
    fun env build ->
      cduce_prepare_compile env build;
      Cmd(S(
        [ocamlfind; ocamlc;
         T(tags_of_pathname (env "%.cdo")
           ++"cduce"++"ocamlc"++"compile"++"byte")]
        @ (cduce_compile_args env)))
  end
;;
The difference with the former rules, is that we call cduce_prepare_compile which in turns call (build [[env "%.cmi"]]). The call to build will ask ocamlbuild to compile src/foo.cmi, but we don't care about the result, i.e. in case of Outcome.Bad exn we don't fail. This way we don't stop the build process that will continue and produce a .cmo and .cmi just out of the .cdo. The .cdo itself is compiled as a .ml file with ocamlfind ocamlc except that we apply cduce --mlstub as a preprocessor A"-pp"; Quote(S[cduce; ..; A"--mlstub"]). The last rule that I will comment is the one that transform a .intf into a .ml. This rule is particular because it is totally different than the pieces of code of the original Makefile. Here are the couple of rules that was needed to translate .intf:
examples/adwords/%Service.cmx: examples/adwords/%Service.intf
   ocamlfind ocamlopt $(OCAMLOPTFLAGS) -c \
     -pp "camlp5o ./pa_ocsoapclientstubs.cmo -impl" -c -impl $<
.depend: $(wildcard *.mli) $(wildcard *.ml) \
  $(wildcard examples/adwords/*.mli) $(wildcard examples/adwords/*.ml)
  $(OCAMLDEP) $^ > .depend
  for f in examples/adwords/*.intf; do \
    $(OCAMLDEP) \
    -pp "camlp5o ./pa_ocsoapclientstubs.cmo pr_o.cmo -impl" $$f \
    >> .depend; \
  done
Here is the ocamlbuild rule:
rule "ocsoap: %.intf -> %.ml"
  ~prod:"%.ml"
  ~deps:(if !ocsoap_dev then
           ["%.intf"; !pa_ocsoapclientstubs]
         else
           ["%.intf"])
  begin
    fun env build ->
      Cmd(S[Px !camlp5o; P !pa_ocsoapclientstubs; P "pr_o.cmo"; A"-impl";
            P(env "%.intf"); A"-o"; P(env "%.ml")])
  end
;;
Here we decided to translate directly the .intf into a .ml file. The good thing about ocamlbuild is that it has a powerfull dynamicy dependencies scheme. So here you will generate the .ml file, which in turns will generate a .ml.depends and then will be compiled the standard way. In the makefile, you need to compute the .depends file using a different process that will do everything before the compilation even starts (in fact, before the inclusion of the .depends). We also use the trick to use an OCaml printer (pr_o.cmo) with camlp5o, that will directly output the standard .ml file. Don't hesitate to post comment if you have question about OASIS and ocamlbuild Enjoy.

Niels Thykier: Lintian 2.5.7 and 2.5.8

The new version of Lintian (2.5.8) can pretty much be summed up as:
Its like 2.5.7, only with less false positives and no FTBFS.
Especially people annoyed by the hardening flags will hopefully find that 2.5.8 greatly reduces the number of false positives. I believe this is best demonstrated with an example:
$ lintian --print-version && lintian -q -C binaries amarok_2.5.0-1_i386.deb   wc -l
2.5.7
94
[...]
$ lintian --print-version && lintian -q -C binaries amarok_2.5.0-1_i386.deb   wc -l
2.5.8
4
However, nothing comes for free. We dropped hardening-no-stackprotector from the default profile (and demoted it to an I tag). For hardening-no-fortify-functions we made a false positive -> false negative trade-off by ignoring binaries if their only unprotected function is memcpy. For more information, please refer to #673112. hardening-no-stackprotector is still available and can be used via the debian/extra-hardening profile (or via the tags argument). For the 2.5.7 behaviour of hardening-no-fortify-functions, you have to use hardening-check directly. But 2.5.7 had other changes besides the myriad of false-positives: A consequence of this is that we no longer warn if you use things like dpkg assert-working-epoch or your postinst creates a usr/doc transition symlink . With all the Lintian modules under the Lintian namespace, we can install them in the standard perl @INC path. Admittedly, I am not certain we are ready to commit to the current API in these modules, which is one of the reasons why they are still installed in /usr/share/lintian. But in a couple of releases things may look differently. :) Lintain 2.5.7 ships over 50 data files of various kinds (usually white- or blacklists of some kind). Before 2.5.7, all data files with a few exceptions would be loaded eagerly (i.e. as soon as the check was run for the first time). A few data files had been special cased with manual laziness . In 2.5.7, Lintian::Data was updated to lazily load the data. So depending on the packages being checked, Lintian may now load fewer data files. While this is not something exclusive to 2.5.7, we have separated quite a few checks from their data tables by now. My personal favorites are the table of known interpreters and (from 2.5.8) the table of known versioned interpreters. I am certainly biased here. But this is probably the most awesome feature in Lintian 2.5.7. It is now possible for vendors to extend or simply shadow the core Lintian data files. Allow me to demonstrate how this can be used:
$ lintian --tags build-depends-on-obsolete-package a2ps_4.14-1.1.dsc
E: a2ps source: build-depends-on-obsolete-package build-depends: dpatch
$ cat ~/.lintian/profiles/local/main.profile
Profile: local/main
Extends: debian/main
$ cat  ~/.lintian/vendors/local/main/data/fields/obsolete-packages
@include-parent
@delete dpatch
bison
$ lintian --profile local/main --tags build-depends-on-obsolete-package a2ps_4.14-1.1.dsc
E: a2ps source: build-depends-on-obsolete-package build-depends: bison
$
It is a toy example, but I believe it is a good demonstration of the feature. The full documentation of Vendor specific data files can be found in the Lintian User manual (in lintian/2.5.7 or newer). It will also be on lintian.debian.org when we find time to update lintian there. :)

Dominique Dumont: My activities during Perl/QA hackathon in Paris

Hello Last week-end, I ve participated Perl/QA hackathon in Paris. Here s a short summary of the main activities during this week-end. I was not in the best of shape due to a nasty (biological) bug that wore me down before the hackathon. First of all, I discussed with rjbs about the bunch of debian patches I ve written for Software::License. These patches (and hacks) are used in Debian to provide licenses summaries in Debian::Dpkg::Copyright model to help write Debian copyright files. License management is boring but necessary. cme and Software::License help in making this task slightly less boring. Ricardo kindly suggested some modifications and agreed to include my patches. I implemented these modifications directly during the hackathon. The other tasks during this week-end were (not necessarily in that order): Many thanks to FreeSide who sponsored my travel, to the hackathons organisers and to all the participants for their welcome. All the best

Rapha&#235;l Hertzog: 3.0 (quilt) is the most widely used Debian source package format

My goal with the 3.0 (quilt) source format has always been to standardize the patch management in Debian source packages. This message seems to have been well understood. dbs and dpatch have been deprecated by their respective maintainers. I made numerous efforts to make this source format useful in as many use cases as possible (but some improvements are still possible) and I have added hints to encourage maintainers to switch. Thanks to this, the adoption rate of this new source format has been very good and it s now the most widely used source package format in Debian only two years after its introduction in Debian unstable. With 9829 source package using 3.0 (quilt) , it surpassed the number of source package still using 1.0 (7368). (Those numbers have been taken from http://upsilon.cc/~zack/stuff/dpkg-v3/ on december 13th 2011.) The number of source packages using 3.0 (quilt) doubled this year.

(Click on the picture to see it full size) Of the 7368 packages using the old format, 6816 packages trigger the missing-debian-source-format lintian tag. This means that only 552 source packages have explicitly opted to keep using the old format and that the bulk of the remaining packages are rarely updated packages that have not been switched yet.

Rudy Godoy: Compute Clusters Integration for Debian Development and Building Report 4

Hello, this is the fourth report for the project. First, I d like to
apologize for being late, I took a short trip over the weekend and
missed the deadline. This time I ve good news for my project. As
expected I ve made the necesary changes to have Eucalyptus support ARM
images. The approach was extending and exposing an arch field that
will be used by libvirt s XML domain file. I m working currently on
having the involved functions working with the new extension and I
expect to have this done over the middle of the next week. What was done so far

- Extended the ncInstance_t struct on util/data.h adding the archId
parameter. This struct keeps the information regarding a node (nc),
say RAM, Kernel, etc. Currently it has no way to set an arch in order
to be used later. typdef struct ncInstance_t
...
char reservationId[CHAR_BUFFER_SIZE];
char userId[CHAR_BUFFER_SIZE];
char archId[CHAR_BUFFER_SIZE]; // arch field added
int retries;
...

The Eucalyptus team was OK with this approach that I ve proposed few
weeks ago. For all my changes the approach is maintain compatibility
with existing features.
We still have to define if we are setting a default value, say amd64,
or keep it unset until the user sets one. For now we will be supporting
amd64 and arm as valid fields. - Modified the allocate_intance() function to support the archId
field. This involved adding a new parameter and detecting whether its
present and setting de value accordingly. This function is later used
by the doRunInstance() function in node/handlers_kvm.c - Modified the involved functions that are called by the KVM handlers
and result in passing parameters to the XML file generator for being
used by libvirt s and KVM and have the image running under
Eucalyptus. The new parameters and field are not required and only
being used if they are set with a value. The archId parameter has been
added as the last one, so existing function calls can work. This could
be rearranged later, but will involve a more extensive revision with
Eucalyptus developers. - I ve set a git local repo in order to keep track of the changes to
Eucalyptus. Since this part is a sort of a Eucalyptus branch I took
this approach. Steffen and I are discussing whether to release this as
a pkg-eucalyptus branch (as dpatch, using existing packaging). Either
way I m putting the diff files form my git repo over the wiki and will
put them on my site too. I plan to use git-svn in order to send them
later to the pkg-eucalyptus repo once we are settled with this. - Updated the project s wiki[1] page with information regarding all that s
involved on my work, so it can be re-played or resumed later. 1- http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2011/BuildWithEucalyptus/ProjectLog What I plan to to over the next weeks
-
- Finish the modifications to the relevant functions. Expected dealine:
next week.
- Do integration tests:
Write a test program, there s an example under node/ that could be
helpful.
Generate the XML domain definition from Eucalyptus functions. The
full cycle: handler_kvm -> allocate_instance -> get_instance_xml ->
have the XML file properly generated -> qemu-kvm runs the instance
using the proper emulator (arm in our case).
- Test runnning the image I ve worked on the project s begining.
- Fixing bits and cooperate with the pkg-eucalyptus team on the
packaging bits.
- Talk to Eucalyptus so they adopt our patches.
- Rock and roll :) What would be nice to have after the project ends
-
- The Debian packaging *needs* work. I ve already discussed this on the
pkg-eucalyptus mailing list. I ve also committed myself to help on
that side even after the SoC ends.
- Talk with upstream and Ubuntu to coordinate the packaging efforts and
modifications to the software.
- Get adopters to use our work :) By now, few weeks about to finish the SoC, I can say that it s been a
good experience and as I stated I m planning to keep maintaing/working
on the software after that. I ve already joined the pkg-eucalyptus team
and plan to contribute actively. I m sad I didn t managed to get Debconf
this year, time was a constraint again, hopefully we can meet in 2012! I
guess that all by now! Best regards,
Rud

Lucas Nussbaum: Debian is changing

I ve been playing with snapshot.d.o, which is a fantastic resource to look at how Debian has been changing over the years.
Below are some preliminary results about various aspects of source packages: format, packaging helpers, and patch systems.
For clarification: Random comments: If you have other ideas of things to investigate using snapshot.d.o, don t hesitate to ask in comments.

Junichi Uekawa: Reading up on apxs2.

Reading up on apxs2. debian/patches/076_apxs2_a2enmod.dpatch seems to make apxs2 use mods-available, but then when I make an apache module and install, it doesn't help me make the file.

Andreas Metzler: exim testers

I would appreciate if you could test the proposed fixes for the exim4 privilege escalation bug CVE-2010-4345. Preliminary binary and source packages for squeeze/sid and lenny are available here:
deb http://www.bebt.de/debian/ sid exim4+cve
deb-src http://www.bebt.de/debian/ sid exim4+cve
deb http://www.bebt.de/debian/ lenny exim4+cve
deb-src http://www.bebt.de/debian/ lenny exim4+cve
You can also browse the changes in SVN (lenny and sid) or build your own binaries.
Changelog: NEWS entry: Exim versions up to and including 4.72 are vulnerable to CVE-2010-4345. This is a privilege escalation issue that allows the exim user to gain root privileges by specifying an alternate configuration file using the -C option. The macro override facility (-D) might also be misused for this purpose. In reaction to this security vulnerability upstream has made a number of user visible changes. This package includes these changes. If exim is invoked with the -C or -D option the daemon will not regain root privileges though re-execution. This is usually necessary for local delivery, though. Therefore it is generally not possible anymore to run an exim daemon with -D or -C options. However this version of exim has been built with TRUSTED_CONFIG_LIST=/etc/exim4/trusted_configs. TRUSTED_CONFIG_LIST defines a list of configuration files which are trusted; if a config file is owned by root and matches a pathname in the list, then it may be invoked by the Exim build-time user without Exim relinquishing root privileges. As a hotfix to not break existing installations of mailscanner we have also set WHITELIST_D_MACROS=OUTGOING. i.e. it is still possible to start exim with -DOUTGOING while being able to do local deliveries. If you previously were using -D switches you will need to change your setup to use a separate configuration file. The ".include" mechanism makes this easy. The system filter is run as exim_user instead of root by default. If your setup requies root privileges when running the system filter you will need to set the system_filter_user exim main configuration option.

Rapha&#235;l Hertzog: The secret plan behind the 3.0 (quilt) Debian source package format

New source package formats do wondersWhile I have spent countless hours working on the new source format known as 3.0 (quilt) , I ve just realized that I have never blogged about its features and the reasons that lead me to work on it. Let s fix this. The good old 1.0 format Up to 2008, dpkg-source was only able to cope with a single source format (now named 1.0 ). That format was used since the inception of the project. While it worked fine for most cases, it suffered from a number of limitations mainly because it stored the Debian packaging files as a patch to apply on top of the upstream source tarball. This patch can have two functions: creating the required files in the debian sub-directory and applying changes to the upstream sources. Over time, if the maintainer made several modifications to the upstream source code, they would end up entangled (and undocumented) in this single patch. In order to solve this problem, patch systems were created (dpatch, quilt, simple-patchsys, dbs, ) and many maintainers started using them. Each implementation is slightly different but the basic principle is always the same: store the upstream changes as multiple patches in the debian/patches/ directory and apply them at build-time (and remove them during cleanup). Design goals for the new formats When I started working on the new source package format, I set out to get rid of all the known limitations and to integrate a patch system in dpkg-source. I wanted to clear up the situation so that learning packaging only requires to learn one patch system and would not require modifying debian/rules to use it. I picked quilt because it was popular, came with a large set of features, and was not suffering from NIH syndrome. This lead to the 3.0 (quilt) source format. I also created 3.0 (native) as a distinct format. 1.0 was able to generate two types of source packages (native and non-native) but I did not want to continue with this mistake of mixing both in a single format. The KISS principle dictated that the user should pick the format of his choice, put it in debian/source/format and be done with it. Now the build can rightfully fail when the requirements are not met instead of doing something unexpected as a fallback. Features of 3.0 (quilt) This is the format that replaces the non-native variant of the 1.0 source format. The features below are specific to the new format and differentiate it from its ancestor: Features of 3.0 (native) This format is very similar to the native variant of the 1.0 source format except for two things: Timeline Looking back at the history is interesting. This project already spans multiple years and is not really over until a majority of packages have switched to the new formats. As you can see this project is not over yet, although the most difficult part is already behind me. For my part, the biggest lesson is that you won t ever get enough review until your work is used within unstable. So if you have a Debian project that impacts a lot of people, make sure to organize an official review process from the start. And specifying your project through a Debian Enhancement Proposal is probably the best way to achieve this. If you appreciate the work that I put into this project, feel free to join Flattr and to flattr dpkg from time to time. Or check out my page Support my work .

Julien Valroff: Converted my packages to 3.0 (quilt) source format

I have now finished converted most of the packages I maintain (part of the official archive or not) to the new 3.0 (quilt) source format. I first had to switch from dpatch or cdbs simple-patchsys to quilt, which was easy thanks to Romain Francoise s old blog post. Also note this quick adaptation for cdbs:
for i in $(ls debian/patches/*.patch); do \
    I=$(basename $i   sed 's/.patch$//'); \
    quilt import -P $I.diff $i; \
done
The rest was much easier than what I thought, thanks to the related page on the wiki. I have already tried uploading a package to my personal repository, and reprepro just worked as expected.
